It has been nearly a decade since my last published book, and I had thought my days of writing were behind me. However, a few years ago, my friend and colleague Jonathan Ferris approached me with an intriguing proposition: co-authoring a third book. This book aimed to formally introduce the power of the SNAP Number Sense Assessment to a global audience.
Jonathan’s idea piqued my interest, and together we embarked on outlining what this book could become. Recognizing the importance of educator voices from our school district—who breathe life into this assessment daily—we sought out contributions from these key stakeholders. Many of them, including those who originally co-created and field tested the assessment from 2013 to 2015, enthusiastically supported our endeavour. Their voices shine through in the writing.
Additionally, we invited our good friend and educational thought leader Tom Hierck to join our project. Tom’s longstanding advocacy for our assessment initiatives span two decades (ANIE, ALIE, SoRA, and PLAN) and fortunately he said “yes!”.
Fast forward to July 2024, and our book is now published with Solution Tree! We are immensely proud of the effort poured into its production, a culmination of over ten years of rigorous action research. SNAP has served tens of thousands of students and hundreds of teachers, proving to be an invaluable formative, summative, and instructional tool that simplifies the understanding of number sense and makes learning a “SNAP!”.
Yesterday, the three of us received the first printed copies of our book – The SNAP Solution. To celebrate, we recorded a brief unboxing video to share our excitement. Here it is!
What an honour it was to co-author this book! The SNAP truly makes a difference for students, and the book celebrates the work, dedication and commitment of the educators in SD 33 Chilliwack!
